Husbands and Men

Why is it that husbands and men shut down or act like they are bothered if their wives want them to work on stuff in their marriage? You ask them to tell you what changes has your wife made, they say one good thing but then add 10 bad things. Is it some kind of gene that they where born with? I just don't get i.
